Brain Drain

All the debris that clogs up the drain of my mind

That’s one thing that’s always, like, been a difference between, like, the performing arts, and being a painter, you know. A painter does a painting, and he paints it, and that’s it, you know. He has the joy of creating it, it hangs on a wall, and somebody buys it, and maybe somebody buys it again, or maybe nobody buys it and it sits up in a loft somewhere until he dies. But he never, you know, nobody ever, nobody ever said to Van Gogh, ‘Paint a Starry Night again, man!’ You know? He painted it and that was it.

The Black Angels - You on the Run (Live)

A heaping slice of psychedelic goodness!

Heart and Jason Bonham - Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin Cover)

Ann fucking Wilson, people. Jesus christ can that woman sing. The moment where she really belts it out and they cut to Robert Plant with tears in his eyes… Wow. Best cover of this song ever.

Tina Weymouth.

One of my all time favourite bassists, she always keeps it funky.

Grouper - Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping

This is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard A LOT of songs. The haze and atmosphere of this song is absolutely amazing. Liz Harris’ work is generally great, but Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill is my favourite.

Elvis Costello and Fiona Apple - I Want You (Live)

This performance… Holy fuck. Fiona gets it. She is feeling every word. She is an intense performer, but I’ve never seen her match the intensity of this performance. This is the ultimate version of this song. If I was Elvis Costello, I’d never sing it again. What’s the point? He will always fall short of the bar Fiona set. His guitar playing, and the arrangement of this take, are superb, perfectly compliments Fiona. This is one of the greatest performance on all of YouTube (and those lyrics! Damn…)

Pig Destroyer - Hyperviolet

The polyrhythms, the feedback break, good lyrics (a grindcore band with poetic lyrics?!? What!), I can dig it.

Wye Oak - Civilian (Live on KEXP)

My intention was to post a new Wye Oak tune, but the new album and I still aren’t 100% agreeing yet. Lyrically and musically, Civilian is one of my favourite Wye Oak tunes. Both the clean bits and the solo at the end are Jenn at her most Neil Young.
